Selection Of ABS Material Grades

ABS is not a "one-size-fits-all" material. By selecting specific ABS grades or utilizing specialized additives, we can manufacture parts with enhanced physical properties tailored to your exact industry standards. Here are the most common custom ABS grades we process:

General Purpose ABS

Excellent balance of impact resistance, rigidity, and cost-effectiveness.

Best Used For

Consumer electronics enclosures, everyday household appliances, toys, and standard daily hardware.

Flame Retardant (FR) ABS

Formulated with additives to self-extinguish. Meets strict UL94 V-0 standards.

Best Used For

Power strips, computer housings, battery enclosures, and electrical components.

High-Heat (Heat Resistant) ABS

Can withstand higher continuous operating temperatures without deformation.

Best Used For

Automotive interior components, heat-generating household appliances, and industrial enclosures.

Glass-Fiber Reinforced (GF ABS)

Blended with 10%–30% glass fibers for superior structural rigidity and tensile strength.

Best Used For

Industrial equipment parts, heavy-duty structural frames, and components requiring high load-bearing capabilities.

Electroplating Grade ABS

Specifically optimized for chemical adhesion during the metal plating process.

Best Used For

Chrome-plated automotive trim, premium bathroom fixtures, and decorative cosmetic packaging.

FAQ For ABS Injection Molding

Find answers about tooling ownership, production capabilities, materials, lead times, and our injection molding process.

What is the lead time for custom ABS parts at Rally Plastic?
Our standard mold manufacturing takes 20–30 days. The total lead time, from order confirmation to final mass production readiness, typically ranges from 35 to 40 days.
What is your Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for ABS parts?
For standard plastic injection molding projects, Rally Plastic's MOQ is 1,000 sets per order. For projects involving silicone molding, we can support small-batch production. If you have special requirements during the new product pilot testing phase, please contact our engineering team to discuss flexible sample solutions.
Can you handle international shipping and customs clearance?
Yes, we handle worldwide shipping. We support flexible trade terms like FOB and CIF, also prepare the required export documents to ensure smooth customs clearance.
How do you protect my intellectual property (IP) and design?
Rally Plastic strictly signs and adheres to Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) before you share any CAD files or proprietary information. Furthermore, all our mold-making and injection molding processes are completed securely in-house.
What CAD files do you need to provide an accurate quote?
Simply upload your 3D CAD files (STEP, IGES) and a 2D drawing (PDF) indicating specific tolerances, material grades, or surface finishes. Rally Plastic's engineering team will review your files and provide a detailed quote along with a free DFM report within 24 hours.
How do you guarantee the quality of the final mass-produced parts?
We implement strict Quality Control (QC) at every stage, including raw material verification, First Article Inspection (FAI) for T1 samples, in-process routing inspections during mass production, and a final outgoing quality check before shipment.

Technical Guide:
ABS Injection Molding

abs injection molding process

What Is ABS Plastic Injection Molding?

ABS plastic injection molding is a highly efficient manufacturing process where Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene pellets are melted and injected under high pressure into a precise steel cavity. Once cooled, the thermoplastic solidifies into a durable, impact-resistant part. At Rally Plastic, our engineers leverage this process to produce complex geometries with excellent surface finishes and dimensional stability.

ABS Property Typical Value
Tensile Strength 40–50 MPa
Flexural Strength 65–75 MPa
Impact Strength (Izod) 200–300 J/m
Heat Deflection Temp. 95–105°C
Material Shrinkage 0.4%–0.7%
Water Absorption 0.2–0.4%
Density 1.04 g/cm³
PC & ABS

Can PC be dual injection molded with ABS?

Yes, Polycarbonate (PC) and ABS can be successfully dual injection molded (two-shot molding) because they share excellent chemical compatibility and similar processing temperatures. When molded together, they form a robust mechanical and chemical bond without requiring separate adhesives. Rally Plastic frequently utilizes this technique to combine the extreme impact resistance and transparency of PC with the superior machinability and cost-efficiency of ABS, creating highly durable, multi-functional enclosures for premium electronic and automotive components.

Material Comparison

ABS vs. PC vs. PP: Which is Right for You?

Choosing between these common thermoplastics depends entirely on your specific application. ABS offers an excellent balance of cost, impact resistance, and superior surface finishes (like electroplating). PC (Polycarbonate) provides higher heat resistance, transparency, and extreme impact strength, but at a higher material cost. PP (Polypropylene) excels in chemical resistance and flexibility—perfect for living hinges—but is difficult to paint or glue. If you have any questions, please contact Rally Plastic's engineers for your own recommendation.

ABS & nylon

Can ABS and nylon use the same injection mold?

Technically, it is generally not recommended to use the same injection mold for both ABS and nylon (PA) without tooling modifications. Nylon has a significantly higher shrink rate (often 1.0%–1.5%) compared to the 0.4%–0.7% typical for ABS. If you inject nylon into a tool cut specifically for ABS, the resulting parts will likely be undersized and fail dimensional tolerances. Additionally, nylon requires much higher melt and mold temperatures, which might exceed the thermal design limits of the existing ABS mold.

Sink Marks Prevention

How can sink marks be avoided in ABS injection molding?

Sink marks in ABS molding usually occur due to uneven cooling and thermal contraction in thicker sections of the plastic part. To prevent this, engineers must adhere to strict Design for Manufacturing (DFM) guidelines. The most critical rule is maintaining a uniform wall thickness. If reinforcing ribs are necessary, their base thickness should not exceed 60% of the adjacent nominal wall. Furthermore, optimizing holding pressure and extending cooling times within the m
