Injection molding electronics usually starts with enclosure design optimization, material selection, and DFM analysis. Engineers need to consider wall thickness, draft angles, ribs, bosses, snap fits, and assembly requirements before tooling. Custom electronic plastic parts frequently require highly specific integrated features to function correctly. Designers must carefully incorporate PCB mounting bosses, threaded screw posts, secure snap fits, isolated battery compartments, thermal ventilation slots, and internal cable routing structures. Designing these features properly is crucial for improving downstream assembly efficiency and structural integrity. For most injection molded electronic enclosures, a standard draft angle of approximately 0.5° to 2° per side is highly recommended. This taper is critical to ensure smooth part ejection from the mold cavity and to protect external cosmetic surfaces. However, textured surfaces may require an additional 1° to 1.5° of draft for every 0.001 inches of texture depth. Implementing proper draft design early helps prevent undesirable drag marks, severe scratches, internal stress build-up, and costly long-term mold damage. (78 words)
